6 weeks at sea on an offshore support vessel

Our System Naval Architect office, RED-TO-GREEN, has been given offshore structural support to Marine Masters on one of their salvage projects in Ashkelon, Israel.

The challenge

Our R2G senior Structural Engineer and Naval Architect, Turgay Durmaz, has spent 6 weeks at sea on an offshore support vessel where, together with the team of Marine Masters, he has been responsible of the salvage of the Ashkelon coal jetty and a 1200 [ton] crane that collapsed into the sea at a 23 [m] depth earlier this year. The project has been facing multiple challenges due to the unknown situation of the collapsed structure at the seafloor and the time pressure for local stakeholders to get the coal jetty back in action.

Durmaz has enjoyed the task and the experience: “A real new challenge to do this instant calculation and structural hoists onboard the vessel. It is nothing like in the office where you can prepare adequately and re-check your work. At this project, every calculation and hoist in the salvage has to be spot on for the safety of the divers, crew onboard and the ships involved in the salvage.

It was hugely satisfying to assist in this project with RED-TO-GREEN for Marine Masters and given this opportunity. After this regretful accident for the community of Ashkelon, I am happy we could finish this salvage safe and within the set timeframes.”

We will not hesitate to employ Turgay again or R2G on one of our projects should we need their expertises

We are very grateful to Marine Masters for the opportunity to work together and Marine Consultant Dirk Jan Ossinga who was in charge of the salvage and stated: “We have very much valued the input of Turgay, he is dedicated, very serious about his work and gets involved in all the steps from design to the actual rigging. We will not hesitate to employ Turgay again or R2G on one of our projects should we need their expertises.”
The Naval Architecture services of RED-TO-GREEN includes new vessel design, refit, engineering of yachts and boats and also structural and engineering support at sea.
